Design and Technology

All children will have an opportunity to develop cookery skills each year. One cookery project (in addition to the other 2 DT projects) will be taught during the year.

Intent

  • Pupils will develop an understanding of iterative design through: disassembling, designing, prototyping, testing and evaluating in all projects in DT.
  • Pupils are equipped with the skills needed to work safely with a range of equipment and tools.
  • Pupils will develop a love of cooking, which will provide them with skills for later life. They will understand and apply the key principles of nutrition and healthy eating.
  • Pupils will learn about designers, inventors and key events, both historical and from modern day, that have helped shaped the world.

Implementation

  • A Skills Map has been created to support teachers in knowing which skills to teach and how they will be building on the skills that have been mapped out for each year group within the 5 Design & Technology strands. Our approach to DT teaching allows the children to concentrate on their learning journey and the development of their knowledge and skills along the way, rather than solely focusing on the final outcome.
  • The sequence of lessons allows children to develop their skill using tools and equipment safely through focused practical tasks within each project in DT.
  • Each class will have the opportunity to be involved in a whole school DT project. This will take place annually and will centre around local enterprise and industry, inviting designers in to ignite.

Enrichment opportunities

In addition to curriculum lesson time there are:

  • One whole school local DT project e.g. Dyson, GTech, Bosch, Mazak, Bake Off.
  • design
